In November of 2020 I had the honor of presenting a workshop with a team of SAS teachers about Decolonizing the Curriculum. This workshop entailed engaging the participants in challenging race and racism with learners, auditing and using resources with learners, learning about possible ways to audit their collections and sources for diversifying their collections, and reflecting on their process. The cores of my part of the presentation – showing possible ways to audit their collections and sources for diversifying their collections – was based on work from the Equity in Action: Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture that was sponsored by School Library Journal, Library Journal and Edmaker during the fall of 2020. Overall, the course was excellent and the feedback from the presentation at SAS was well received. The new challenge that I have is to continue to provide a positive inclusive culture in the SAS HS Library but more so to keep diversifying the collection to best match the needs/wants of our high school.
